The Oneonta Radio Control Flyers was invited to the Oneonta World of Learning (OWL) Ice Cream Social. The social, sponsored by The Daily Star, was to be held at Wilber Park. Thunder showers and high winds grounded the planned foamy flight demonstrations. The festivities had to be moved to the Foothills Performing Arts Center. It didn’t matter, Ice cream, airplanes and discovery, what could be better?

Mommy, mommy look at the planes!!! The ORCF members heard the dreams of the future pilots as the ice cream melted in their cones. “How fast does that one go?” was asked of Paul Meyer. His Yak was at the center of the display. Ted Connors demonstrated how the transmitter controlled servo movement. Ok, the children may not know what a servo is… but wasn’t that cool?

Education and creating interest in our sport is paramount. The Mayor of Oneonta, Richard P. Miller, Jr., said that, “The Oneonta World of Learning and the participants of the Ice Cream Social showed the best of the community looking after and educating its youth”. ORCF helped build a greater understanding and acceptance of radio controlled aircraft among the youth of our community.

ORCF thanks the Oneonta World of Learning for the privilege of participating in the event.
